Welcome to the 2022 GEPF Annual Thought Leadership Conference in partnership with the World Bank Treasury. It is my honour and privilege to host you as the Principal Executive Officer of the GEPF to this prestigious and exciting conference.<\/p>\n

Since the inception of this conference, we have seen it grow significantly with stimulating dialogue, thought provoking and impactful discussions on the opportunities and challenges facing the global pension industry. We have also seen interest from industry peers across the globe to attend the conference and participate. Indeed; we are honoured by the interest and support received for these conference this far.<\/p>\n

The GEPF Annual Thought Leadership Conference \u00a0comes at a significant time, where the global community is grappling \u00a0with various challenges like lack of economic growth largely due to Covid-19, high inflation, high oil \u00a0prices and the current war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The pension fund and investment industries are not exempt from these challenges.\u00a0 It is our hope that when we meet in Cape Town in September, we will be able to extensively deliberate, discuss and propose solutions that will minimise the impact of the challenges we face thereby ensuring positive outcome for those we serve, our members and pensioners.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s conference will focus on various topics that affect pension and retirement funds and business operations in these uncertain times, providing thought provoking and informative engagements. It is my hope that you find the discussions fruitful and stimulating.<\/p>\n

Jeremy Maggs is a media specialist with close on forty years\u2019 experience in television, radio, and print. Until recently, he hosted television news channel eNCA\u2019s weekday lunchtime news programme before stepping down to co-found Bold<\/em> \u2013 a strategy and reputation management enterprise which is part of the independent Brave Group.<\/p>\n

Best known for his role as presenter of the international hit show Who Wants to be Millionaire,<\/em> he also is the founder of maggsonmedia <\/em>one of the longest running media and advertising shows in international television history. The show has moved with the times and is now online. Maggs also has extensive media management experience. He acted as editor-in-chief of eNCA for 18 months in 2019. Prior to that he was editor of Radio 702\u2019s Eyewitness News for 8 years. He also writes for the authoritative Financial Mail on the advertising industry.<\/p>\n

Maggs has also worked for SAfm and Power 98.7 where his programme The Power Update<\/em> won best current affairs programme at the 2017 Liberty Radio Awards. In the same year he was also inducted into the SA Radio Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n

He is the author of a bestselling book Win! Compelling Conversations with 20 Successful South Africans <\/em>which is also a powerful corporate presentation.<\/p>\n

Maggs is an accomplished public speaker, popular and witty MC, and conference facilitator<\/p>\n

He also runs a successful media training and coaching business with numerous blue-chip listed companies as clients.<\/p>\n

He has just completed his second book, My Final Answer. <\/em>Published by Pan McMillan it is a memoir of his life and experience in the media.<\/p>\n

Mr. Sibiya has 13 years of experience within financial services, specialising in investments, financial risk management and employee benefits. Prior to joining the GEPF; Mr. Sibiya worked at Alexander Forbes as an Investments Actuary and led the Actuarial Investments function. He also worked at Deloitte Financial Services Advisory as an Actuarial Manager.<\/p>\r\n

He holds Honours degree in Mathematical Statistics and a degree in Actuarial Science from the University of the Witwatersrand and he is currently finalising his Master\u2019s degree in Finance and Investments. Mr. Sibiya is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, a Charter Enterprise Risk Actuary and a CAIA Charterholder.<\/p>\r\n

Musa Mabesa is the Principal Executive Officer (PEO) of the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF). He is a seasoned finance professional with over 17 years\u2019 experience, 10 of which is in the pension fund industry, specialising in financial management and reporting, governance and corporate services.<\/p>\r\n

Prior to joining the GEPF, Mr Mabesa worked for various private and public sector institutions in various positions. In 2011 he joined the GEPF as a Finance Manager and was subsequently appointed as Head of Corporate Services in 2017. In 2020 Mr Mabesa became the Principal Executive Officer of the GEPF.<\/p>\r\n

Mr Mabesa holds a Master of Science (MSc) degree from University of London and Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting Science (BCompt) from University of South Africa (UNISA). He is a Chartered Certified Accountant through the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and is a member of the Institute of Directors Southern Africa.<\/p>\r\n

Director, Asset Management & Advisory Department Treasury

Th\u00e9r\u00e8se is responsible for leading the World Bank Treasury\u2019s newly created Department of Asset Management and Advisory. In her capacity as Director, Ms. Couture oversees the asset management of $70 billion of liquidity and fixed income portfolios for Trust Funds and clients, including central banks, pension funds, and International Financial Institutions. She also provides strategic leadership for the technical advisory and capacity building under the RAMP program.
Th\u00e9r\u00e8se joined the World Bank in 2018 as Director of Treasury Operations. She managed a team responsible for back-office functions supporting Treasury and the processing of over $7 trillion cash flows on behalf of the World Bank. Th\u00e9r\u00e8se previously served as Senior Director for Banking Operations in the Funds Management and Banking Department at the Bank of Canada. She held management positions in different organizations prior to her tenure at the Bank of Canada.

Lead Investment Strategist<\/p>\r\n

Gabriel Petre leads the team responsible for the asset allocation and ESG integration strategy for the World Bank’s post-retirement benefit funds. As part of his work he is also involved in advising public pension funds of developing countries on governance, investment policy and asset allocation issues and official institutions of commodity-rich countries in setting up sovereign wealth funds.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

He joined the World Bank Treasury in July 2006. Before joining the World Bank, he worked for the National Bank of Romania, as part of the team in charge of the Foreign Reserves portfolio.\u00a0 He has an MBA from Georgetown McDonough School of Business and is a CFA and CAIA charterholder.<\/p>\r\n

Dr. Daniela Klingebiel is the Manager of the Reserve Advisory and Management Partnership (RAMP). RAMP provides advisory and training as well as asset management services to central banks, public pension funds, and sovereign wealth funds. It now has more than 70 clients globally with assets under management of $26 billion and works with clients to enhance their asset management policies, frameworks, and practices. She has over twenty years of asset management, financial, and capital markets experience. She has published extensively in the areas of pension management, capital markets, banking, financial crises, and enterprise and financial sector restructuring in leading professional and academic journals.<\/p>\r\n

Prior to her current position, Dr. Klingebiel was the Principal Portfolio Manager in the World Bank\u2019s Pension and Endowment Department also worked in the World Bank\u2019s Research, and Financial Sector Policy and Strategy Departments as well as in two regional departments.<\/p>\r\n

Dr. Klingebiel earned her doctorate degree in economics at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg, Germany along with a Master of Arts in Political Science and Master of Science in Economics.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
